Landfill Leachate Treatment Equipment: Combining Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysis
Landfill leachate is one of the least forgiving industrial streams in existence. Salinity is high, COD is high, organic load is high, composition is complex and biodegradability is poor. Equipment built for municipal wastewater or for ordinary industrial effluent rarely survives the combination. The SINOKLE landfill leachate treatment equipment is designed around homogeneous and heterogeneous multiple catalytic oxidation technology, integrating the CDFU and CDOF proprietary processes with key technologies such as ozone microbubble generation, and its performance differences follow directly from that architecture.
Why One Catalyst Is Never Enough
Homogeneous catalysts generate hydroxyl radicals efficiently, but they are hard to recover and their activity depends on tightly controlled conditions. Heterogeneous catalysts built on multiple active metal oxides are recoverable and stable, yet their reaction rates alone are often insufficient for the recalcitrant macromolecules found in leachate. Running the two together produces hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals and other active species rapidly, and when ozone microbubble generation is added, ozone utilisation improves markedly and ozone oxidation performance is more than 6 times higher than with a single-catalyst route. Efficiency of active species generation and overall oxidation capacity both exceed what any single-catalyst technology can reach, which attacks the industry pain point of poorly degradable macromolecular organics at its root.
Staged Degradation Matched to Real Leachate
Given the high salinity, high organic load, strong colour and pronounced odour of leachate, pollutants are degraded in stages. Homogeneous catalysis rapidly attacks the chemical bonds of macromolecular organics and breaks them into readily degradable small molecules; heterogeneous catalysis then deeply oxidises the small-molecule intermediates through its highly porous structure, converting them into harmless substances and preventing toxic accumulation. Dissolved oil and benzene series compounds are removed efficiently as well, with exceptional colour and odour removal. Crucially, the system overcomes the inhibition of catalytic reactions by salt ions and holds stable oxidation activity under high-salinity conditions. COD removal rises from 42% with conventional processes to 88%, benzene series removal reaches 98%, and shock resistance to leachate quality fluctuation is strong.
Reaction Time and Capacity
CDOF proprietary process design and high-porosity microporous forming technology give the equipment ample reaction interface, extending contact between pollutants and active species and greatly improving mass transfer. The effective reaction time of the core oxidation unit is only 15 minutes, one tenth that of conventional processes, which enables rapid on-site compliant treatment and solves the low efficiency and long reaction cycles typical of older equipment. Capacity reaches up to 200 m3/h, covering the leachate treatment needs of different scales.
Energy, Consumables and the Cost Curve
Efficient hydroxyl generation from homogeneous catalysis reduces oxidant dosing, while the high activity and stability of the heterogeneous catalyst further lowers the proportion of homogeneous catalyst required, cutting overall oxidant consumption by more than 50%. Ozone microbubble technology improves ozone utilisation and avoids chemical waste. The heterogeneous catalyst additionally undergoes hydrophilic modification and anti-fouling treatment, extending its service life to more than 6 years against an industry average of 2-3 years, with no frequent replacement. Fully automatic operation then trims labour and maintenance further, bringing overall operating cost to just one third of conventional equipment while optimising both energy and consumable spending.
Footprint, Fouling and Maintenance
The system uses a highly integrated skid-mounted design with a greatly simplified process flow, occupying only one fifth of the footprint of conventional leachate treatment equipment and requiring no large-scale civil works. Custom manufacturing is supported, with equipment parameters adjusted to actual project needs, and shipping plus installation are convenient, shortening construction and commissioning cycles considerably.
On the anti-fouling side, hydrophilic modification combined with anti-clogging technology greatly reduces adsorption and scaling of leachate pollutants on the catalyst surface, preventing deactivation and equipment blockage. The synergistic catalytic system is little affected by water quality fluctuation and operates stably at up to 50 C and 0.1 mPa. A fully automatic control system runs the unit under pressure in a fully enclosed mode, supporting remote monitoring and unattended operation and cutting manual maintenance frequency substantially.
Discharge Quality and Secondary Pollution
There is no metal leaching throughout the process, and effluent meets the heavy metal discharge requirements of the Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard (GB 8978-1996). A full-volume, membrane-free process is used, producing no concentrate and greatly reducing sludge volume, which prevents secondary pollution at the source. Pressurised fully enclosed operation means zero leakage and no odour diffusion, a combination suited to the ecological requirements of waste treatment sites.
Adaptability Beyond Leachate
The equipment incorporates multiple patented technologies, with core processes internationally leading and unique in China. Besides landfill leachate and press liquid, it provides tailored solutions for pre-treatment and advanced treatment of refractory wastewater in the pharmaceutical, metallurgical and oilfield industries, as well as upgrades at wastewater treatment plants. Multiple landfill leachate projects are already running successfully with stable compliance and strong owner recognition, which is the most reliable assurance of technical maturity available.
Summary
By treating homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic oxidation as partners rather than alternatives, and by pairing them with CDFU and CDOF proprietary processes, the equipment delivers strong oxidation capacity, thorough pollutant removal and short reaction times while keeping operating cost, footprint and maintenance low. For complex leachate water quality it is a sound equipment-level choice.
