Five Checks Before You Retrofit a WWTP Flotation Unit: Two-Stage CDFU Line by Line
Vendors hand out advantage lists; operators need something they can audit. The most useful way to read a flotation retrofit is to break it into dimensions you can measure on your own site, then check each one. The SINOKLE wastewater-treatment-plant upgrade is built around two-stage CDFU cyclonic dissolved-air flotation (CDFU), and its specification makes five claims. Here is what each one means in practice.
Stage one: physical demulsification only
The first CDFU stage demulsifies and separates without chemical help, so the mechanism is stable and the oil-removal efficiency is high. Emulsified waste oil is broken and separated, and, this is the part that shows up on the balance sheet, the oil leaves as recoverable material rather than as oily sludge classified as hazardous waste. No secondary pollution, no hazardous-waste manifest for that stage.
Stage two: a small PAC dose, and much less scum
The second CDFU stage needs only a small amount of PAC to finish flocculation and separation. Dosing stays low and scum volume falls by more than one third, which means less oily sludge generated and lower secondary-treatment cost. Think of it as final polishing done with the minimum chemistry the water will tolerate. Conventional open flotation, by contrast, doses hard for demulsification and then doses harder whenever feed quality moves.
Sealed, pressurised, and quiet about it
The whole unit runs sealed and under pressure. No hydrogen sulfide escapes, no oil gas drifts across the walkway, and the working environment stops being a personal-protection problem. It is a direct answer to the fugitive-emission complaint that has followed open flotation tanks for decades.
Under 5 minutes per stage, on a small plot
Single-stage retention time is less than 5min. That short residence is what keeps the footprint small, the automation package simple, the O&M light and the construction period short, and it is why online implementation is realistic instead of a shutdown project. Retrofits that require a month of downtime rarely get approved.
Shock load, the dimension everyone forgets
Fifth, the arrangement tolerates large water-quality swings and keeps running. For plants whose influent is inconsistent, which is most of them, stability under fluctuation matters more than the peak efficiency number in the brochure.

- Demulsification: conventional flotation relies on chemicals; first-stage CDFU uses purely physical demulsification and separation.
- Chemical dosage: high and rising with fluctuation, versus a small amount of PAC in the second stage.

The numbers you should hold the design to
Process influent oil content is taken at ≤500mg/L with suspended solids ≤200mg/L; process effluent oil content is ≤20mg/L with suspended solids ≤20mg/L. Read those four figures as boundaries rather than promises. If your existing flotation unit is already drifting outside them, the upgrade case writes itself; if it sits comfortably inside, the retrofit is harder to justify.
What the retrofit actually touches
Before scoring any of the five dimensions, it is worth walking the existing installation with the list in hand, because the retrofit scope is usually smaller than expected and the constraints are usually civil rather than process. If the current flotation unit already has a feed pump with adequate head, the existing tank can often stay as a equalisation or buffer stage while the two CDFU skids are installed alongside and tied in, which is what makes the online construction claim credible. What tends to stop projects is not the equipment but the pipework: a sealed pressurized unit needs a gas-tight vent route to the recovery or destruction system, and that route has to be designed before the skid arrives.
What CDFU is, and where it belongs
Cyclonic dissolved-air flotation (CDFU) is a patented technology independently developed by SINOKLE, at an internationally advanced technical level. It puts cyclonic centrifugal separation, microbubble generation and dissolved-air flotation into one system and removes several pollutants at once from difficult wastewater, a new generation of high-efficiency, compact, sealed and pressurized flotation, pioneered in China.
